Exhibition: 'Phenomenal Weather' — Bruce
Museum, Greenwich, CT
Phenomenal Weather is a family-friendly exhibition that showcases
the astounding variety of weather events that take place around
the globe and explores the subject through interactive displays,
objects and images.
Approximately
eight hands-on displays invite visitors to better understand weather
phenomena - from the extreme to the everyday - and the science behind
them. Hurl a hurricane toward North America in the computer activity
'Create-a-cane'. See and hear a real tornado in a mock storm-chasing
vehicle.
Learn
how weather is a response to heat imbalances created by the energy
of the sun. Watch a lab-created snowflake grow. Try to split light
into a rainbow of colors using prisms and mirrors. Learn about cloud
patterns and then test your skills in forecasting the weather. Geological
specimens are testaments to the forcefulness of weather events and
their continuity through the history of the planet. The show includes
unusual objects such as: A Connecticut Valley rock formation that
preserves raindrop impressions along with dinosaur tracks.
The
exhibition is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition
Fund and a Committee of Honor. 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Cost: $7/adults;$6/students

'All
Things Bright & Beautiful: California Impressionists' Exhibit,
Katonah Museum
Impressionism
found fertile ground in California in the early years of the 20th
century. California, with its temperate climate, liberal sunshine,
and beautiful landscape, was an especially popular locale for painters
who worked 'en plein air,' seeking to infuse their work with intense
light and color. By the early 1900s, several of the state's most
picturesque places - Laguna Beach, San Diego, and Monterey - boasted
artists' colonies. The California Impressionist style peaked in
the 1920s; by the end of that decade, with the onset of Modernism
combined with the effects of the Great Depression, it was relegated
to history. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Irvine Museum,
features 59 paintings and one Bischoff Vase, dating from 1890 to
1930. Curators: William H. Gerdts, Professor of Art History, Graduate
School of the City University of New York; and Jean Stern, Executive
Director, The Irvine Museum. Saturday, September 27, 2008, 12:00

Leslie
Lerner' in The Project Gallery — Katonah Museum
Under
the Radar is a new series of solo artist exhibitions that showcase
mid-to-late-career artists who have yet to receive sufficient attention
from museums or galleries. The series debuts with painter Leslie
Lerner -- the choice of KMA Executive Director Neil Watson. Lerner,
who came to artistic maturity in the counter-culture of 1960s San
Francisco, paints in a manner combining the color and fantasy of
a Watteau painting with a contemporary, haunting sensibility. Part
science fiction, part psychedelic apparition, Lerner's paintings
are ultimately meditations on his California experience. 12:00 PM

Climate
Change: From Snowball Earth to Global Warming
The
exhibition, on display in the Arcade Gallery, takes visitors on
a journey through Earth’s history of climatic changes. From
700 million years ago, when the Earth may have been almost completely
covered in ice, to today’s warming climate, examine the fossil
and modern evidence for climatic variations. Learn how scientists
mine ancient ice from Greenland’s ice sheet and the Andes
mountains to reveal the history of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
A
self-contained living biosphere display demonstrates the complex
interplay of water, air, earth and organisms to maintain the balance
for sustaining life on Earth. Examine mounts, fossils and other
specimens that illustrate the impact of climate change on the evolution
of life. Look through a microscope at the tiny organisms that provide
a record of sea surface temperatures, or try a fun quiz to test
your knowledge on ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
