At the summit of Grover’s Hill, at St. Mary's by the Sea in Black Rock Harbor, stands an architectural gem known as The Chimneys.

At first sight, one does a double take. Am I in Newport or Black Rock?

Stately is an Understatement.

This 15,000-square-foot Georgian Revival-style manor house evokes images of English country elegance. Flagstone terraces, Palladian windows, a central courtyard, and a reflecting pool surround the home.

Branching off a 54-foot reception hall are a pine-paneled billiard room, a walnut wood paneled gentleman's library, a grand living room with hand-painted walls, a dining room with beautifully carved niches in a shell motif, and an intimate parlor referred to as the "ladies' fainting room". Adjoining areas include a family room, a gourmet kitchen with butler's pantry, and a breakfast room.

After ascending the grand staircase, one finds two guest chambers, each with baths, a master bedroom suite, an upstairs family retreat, and an upper terrace. Adding a sense of warmth and comfort are fireplaces in virtually every room.

It's no wonder The Chimneys has been selected to be a Designer Showhouse.

This is the year for The Chimneys to shine — and a chance for home professionals to demonstrate their most creative work. A roster of selected interior designers, decorators, and tradespeople is already at work preparing for the Showhouse. By then, this empty mansion, which sits quietly atop Grovers Hill in the St. Mary's by the Sea neighborhood, will be transformed into an exhibition of haute decor. The public will be invited to view this metamorphosis in the Fall.
