Construction Planning: Build Your team
by Sheri Koones

One of the keys to success for any project is building the right team. The exact size and composition of your team will depend upon the particulars of your project and your own preferences; however, there are some general rules of thumb.

Any substantial project should begin with an architect, who will design, and provide plans for, the overall construction. Usually, the architect will take the lead in design matters since his or her responsibility encompasses the overall scope of the project.

In addition to architects, your team will also be comprised of construction professionals, including a general contractor, builder or construction manager, who will oversee the individual contractors and workers involved in your project.

It is best to involve an interior designer in the process as early as possible so that all aspects of the interior design and decorating will be considered during the planning phase.

A landscape designer or landscape architect must also be involved as early as possible so that all aspects of the exterior design will be considered.

You will also want to consider retaining the services of a top-notch kitchen and bath designer if your project will incorporate these rooms.

Other members of your team may include designers concentrating in lighting, home entertainment systems, wine cellars, window treatments or custom cabinetry and woodwork, to name just a few of the many specialized services available.

Building a good team – meaning one that covers all the bases and works well together – can be one of the most challenging and crucial aspects of a large project.
