Master
Bathroom and Bedroom Suite Renovation — by Eileen R. Corbin
Phase
one of this Westport, CT renovation included the master bedroom
suite, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The original master bedroom
and bath in this 1950’s home was very small and had limited
closet space. Included in the renovation was the relocation of the
master bedroom suite above the existing garage.
After
reviewing the Architects’ plans, Eileen recommended extending
the garage by 12 feet, thus permitting the expansion of the master
suite into a new enhanced space. The modified architectural plans
dramatically increased the size of the master suite to include an
enlarged bathroom and a custom walk-in closet. As a full service
design firm, Eileen Corbin supervised all aspects of the project.
Initial discussions with the client established the color scheme
and feeling they wished to create within the master suite.
As
both adults work a full time schedule and raise three children, a
renovation project of this magnitude was rather daunting. They wanted
the ambiance in their master suite to be relaxing and peaceful. When
it was completed, their dreams were realized. High ceilings created
ample space to utilize different tones of yellow on the vertical walls,
slanted portions and ceiling. The atmosphere in the room immediately
gives a feeling of ease and contentment. The fabrics were chosen to
accommodate a similar feeling. The artwork, accessories and window
treatments combine to make the space very livable.
The
expansion of the space provided an area for reading and relaxing
opposite the bed, as well as two storage closets set into the dormers
on either side of the front windows.
As
the master bathroom is just off the bedroom, the color scheme continues
here with only a slight change. The decorative tiles strategically
placed on the limestone floor, above the tub decking, in the shower
and the backsplash on the sinks, pick up the green and coordinate
with the fabrics of the master bedroom. The window treatments utilize
some of the same fabrics as in the bedroom. We created double sinks
in a custom wood vanity and a large walk-in shower, along with oversized
built-in medicine cabinets and a linen closet. The recessed lighting
and sconces add to the ambience and create a serene place in which
to relax in the Jacuzzi tub. The choices of stone and marble along
with the fixtures, hardware, linens, accessories and furnishings were
made simple and clean to harmonize with the room.
Under
Eileen’s direction as project manager for this job, the end
result is a special place where you can observe attention has been
paid to all the details.
According
to Eileen, the use of eclectic solutions is very important. The
infusion of design styles achieves a unique end result by effectively
mixing classic lines with contemporary shapes, color, and texture.
“I like to blend existing items into new design schemes. Incorporating
function with style is also one of our goals. I also believe a master
bedroom should be a peaceful haven. I want it to be a retreat from
the world and the events of the day. A place where a couple can
enjoy each others’ company in harmony and with great joy.”
A
designer’s job is always a pleasure when the client is eager
to make a change in their home or lifestyle. It is not uncommon
for Eileen to hear statements from her clients like, “We never
anticipated our home would be so peaceful and elegant. Working with
Eileen far exceeded our expectations.”
