The American Home In a Global World —

The Kitchen & Breakfast Room at the Kinderwood Showhouse is the perfect expression of a Sophisticated Global Country Style. The Hearth of the American Home here has been decorated and furnished with wonderful objects and ideas from around the world.

The walls are painted with a Tuscan feeling in a faux finished green. The furniture is French, with a Petrin (bread trough) and a Panettiere, (bread holder), exemplifying the warmth of an earlier time in France, the drapery fabric is taken from an English archive, produced in the US by Scalamandre, the faience tableware is from Spain, the wall plates from Turkey, the planters from Portugal, and the garden seat plant stands are from China.

Westport Interior Designer, Susan Lamy, the design arm of Prosperity Interiors, Inc., designed the kitchen and the Breakfast Room with a global theme in mind. She designed the tiles that surround the windows and doors using motifs from the drapery fabric and creating borders with tiny fleurs de lys. Then she had Ceramic Designs of Westport hand paint and produce her tiles one by one.

The tiles, which are all blue and white, add a Scandinavian Country feeling and are really a focal point in the room.

The color scheme of all blue and white with antiqued green walls was selected for the tones of the sky, clouds and trees to set off the exquisite panoramic views of Autumn splendor that pour in through the walls of windows in the Breakfast Room.

The Custom floor cloth was designed by Susan Lamy to anchor the colors at floor level with a casual American flavor.

“We live in a global world,” says Susan Lamy, “and this room takes full advantage of the worldwide marketplace we can now choose from. This is the “New American Home”.”
