Greenwich Interior Designer, Victoria Lyon staged a mid-20th-century modern house designed by architect Philip Johnson (one of the renowned Harvard Five group of architects) with furnishings, original artworks, accessories, and even a built-in closet for a weekend house tour this year.

"The approach was how to adapt a mid-century modern to 21st-century living. Moderns are not meant to be big or ostentatious but to be an exercise in sensible one-floor living. A bedroom is just that, a room for sleeping, not a gigantic hotel-room suite. It's all about the setting and bringing the outside in." says Lyon.

The Modern House was Philip Johnson's first commission after building the Glass House, which is just a few miles away. When Johnson first came to New Canaan, he built his own home, the famous Glass House, in 1949. He lived there until his death in 2005, and it is now a museum. New Canaan was a haven for modern architecture in the 1950s, 60s and '70s, and at one time, there were about 90 modern houses. Many of the houses were subsequently torn down to make way for larger homes. Now, there is a trend in New Canaan toward saving the moderns.
